I’ve always wondered why in the year 2024 there are still countries invading or fighting each other and why with all the lessons we have learned from history there are still people who want to kill each other. Until I met a group of conscientious objectors at a conference in Athens last week who believed in non-violence. International Conscientious Objectors’ Day (15 May) was marked around the world, to raise awareness of the struggles of conscientious objectors and to send them a message of solidarity.
In the many countries where there is conscription, people refusing military service are often imprisoned or forced to become refugees. In Israel, eighteen-year-old Tal Mitnick was the first to declare a conscientious objection since October last year and has since been followed by several others ending up in prison for 100 days and more. Moreover, according to the Refuser Solidarity Network, hundreds more Israelis have refused to participate in the war, both conscripts and reservists. Young Israelis who declare a conscientious objection are aggressively questioned and can be given repeated sentences in military prison, whilst often facing stigmatisation and ostracism from wider society. Similar is the situation with objectors in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Greece and Turkey.

Πάντα αναρωτιόμουν γιατί στο έτος 2024 εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν χώρες που εισβάλλουν σε άλλες ή πολεμούν μεταξύ τους και γιατί με όλα τα μαθήματα που έχουμε πάρει από την ιστορία υπάρχουν ακόμη άνθρωποι που θέλουν να σκοτώσουν ο ένας τον άλλον. Μέχρι που συνάντησα μια ομάδα αντιρρησιών συνείδησης σε ένα συνέδριο στην Αθήνα την περασμένη εβδομάδα που πιστεύουν στη μη βία . Η Διεθνής Ημέρα των Αντιρρησιών Συνείδησης (15 Μαΐου) γιορτάστηκε σε όλο τον κόσμο, για να ευαισθητοποιηθούν οι πολίτες για τους αγώνες των αντιρρησιών συνείδησης και να τους στείλουν ένα μήνυμα αλληλεγγύης.
Σε πολλές χώρες όπου υπάρχει επιστράτευση, οι άνθρωποι που αρνούνται τη στρατιωτική θητεία συχνά φυλακίζονται ή αναγκάζονται να γίνουν πρόσφυγες. Στο Ισραήλ, ο δεκαοκτάχρονος Tal Mitnick ήταν ο πρώτος που δήλωσε άρνηση στράτευσης από τον περασμένο Οκτώβριο και έκτοτε τον ακολούθησαν αρκετοί άλλοι που κατέληξαν στη φυλακή για 100 ημέρες και πάνω. Επιπλέον, σύμφωνα με το Δίκτυο Αλληλεγγύης Αρνητών, εκατοντάδες ακόμη Ισραηλινοί έχουν αρνηθεί να συμμετάσχουν στον πόλεμο, τόσο στρατεύσιμοι όσο και έφεδροι. Οι νέοι Ισραηλινοί που δηλώνουν αντίρρηση συνείδησης ανακτώνται επιθετικά και μπορεί να τους επιβληθούν επανειλημμένες ποινές σε στρατιωτικές φυλακές, ενώ συχνά αντιμετωπίζουν στιγματισμό και εξοστρακισμό από την ευρύτερη κοινωνία. Παρόμοια είναι η κατάσταση με τους αντιρρησίες στην Ουκρανία, τη Ρωσία, τη Λευκορωσία, το Αζερμπαϊτζάν, την Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα και την Τουρκία.
