Despite representing less than 5 percent of the world’s population, Indigenous peoples steward more than a quarter of Earth’s land and seas and protect 80 percent of global biodiversity. Studies show that when Indigenous peoples have the right to govern their land, biodiversity increases and forests are protected.
In Europe, another indigenous population are the Sami people who live in Lapland, in the far north. They are fishermen, reindeer herders – about 80,000 of them. They believe that all living things and natural elements – which other cultures may not even consider alive such as rocks and mountains – have a connection to one another. And they have recently been a case by NASA on their handling of the environment and how they deal with climate change.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι αντιπροσωπεύουν λιγότερο από το 5% του παγκόσμιου πληθυσμού, οι αυτόχθονες πληθυσμοί διαχειρίζονται περισσότερο από το ένα τέταρτο της γης και των θαλασσών της Γης και προστατεύουν το 80% της παγκόσμιας βιοποικιλότητας. Μελέτες δείχνουν ότι όταν οι αυτόχθονες πληθυσμοί έχουν το δικαίωμα να διοικούν τη γη τους, η βιοποικιλότητα αυξάνεται και τα δάση προστατεύονται.
Στην Ευρώπη, ένας άλλος αυτόχθονος πληθυσμός είναι οι Σάμι που ζουν στη Λαπωνία, στον μακρινό βορρά. Είναι ψαράδες, κτηνοτρόφοι ταράνδων – περίπου 80.000 στο σύνολο. Πιστεύουν ότι όλα τα έμβια όντα και τα στοιχεία της φύσης- τα οποία άλλοι πολιτισμοί μπορεί να μην θεωρούν καν ζωντανά, όπως οι βράχοι και τα βουνά – εχουν μια πνευματική σύνδεση με μας αλλά και μεταξύ τους . Και πρόσφατα οι Σάμι μελετήθηκαν από τη NASA για τον τρόπο που συσχετίζονται με το περιβάλλον και την κλιματική αλλαγή.
