“Film music is the art of adaptation and the composer must love transformations. To transform the image, but also to transform himself, like a chameleon. He might need to write music for a scene in a jazz bar, for example. Or even a march, a song… Through the music of cinema we have the luxury of travelling to different places and times, of playing roles almost like an actor, of trying out different styles and musical idioms that we might never have tried if the specific need hadn’t existed. I wonder if I would have ever thought of writing a gypsy song or a rock song, an Armenian lament or a traditional lullaby, if the occasion of a film or a performance had not been there.
