Alternative Aristophanes: Tasos Karakatsanis – Dionysis Savvopoulos
This week, we say “happy new year” with a tribute to Aristophanes and to music for his plays. The great comic playwright, also known as the “Father of Comedy”, and his masterpieces have been a constant source of inspiration for almost all of Greece’s leading composers. Today, we will be focusing to two interesting and highly original cases of composing for Aristophanes. The first one: Savvopoulos’ music for a performance of The Acharnians, which was actually rejected by the director but was released as a stand-alone album. The second one: Karakatsanis’ songs for Lysistrata and Assemblywomen, translated in the local dialect of the island of Symi.
