Kostas Karyotakis was born in 1896 and died in 1928, committing suicide at the age of just 32. He is considered one of the most representative Greek poets of the 1920s, with his poetry adding a tragic dimension to the neo-Symbolist and neo-Romantic poetry of his time. Today, we are listrening poetry of Karyotakis set to music by three of Greece’s greatest composers: Lena Platonos, Mikis Theodorakis and Vassilis Dimitriou. Platonos’ take is quite melancholic, like a whisper; Theodorakis radiates a rock atmosphere, while Dimitriou’s approach is based on his rich melodies.
