Clean Monday is considered one of the most important annual feasts in Greece, constituting an end to the Carnival celebrations and all the masquerading, drinking and dancing that accompany them. For devoted Orthodox Christians, Clean Monday -the start of Lent- is an opportunity for them to symbolically leave behind sinful behaviours and non-fasting foods. For believers and non-believers alike, Clean Monday is a public holiday celebrated with outdoor activities, the consumption of lagana bread and taramosalata spread, and the flying of colourful kites.
