From Dimitris Kontolazos and Katerina Stanisi to Lefteris Pantazis and Antzela Dimitriou, from Tolis Voskopoulos to Pashalis Terzis and Vassilis Karras, there is a musical current that cannot be considered proper folk, but also cannot be ignored. It is something lighter than folk, something perhaps simpler and less sophisticated, but it is there and constitutes an existing and quite popular genre. My natural predisposition is to be critical of its rather basic lyrics and concepts, as well as of the type of entertainment that it historically represented. Still, certain gems are to be found in this style and certain emotional conditions are to be expressed by listening to and singing these songs.
