Greek Music Express – Five Greek Summers: Retro summertime  | 04 June 2024

The New Wave was a genre that developed around the mid-1960s and was an attempt to renew the light song. The term is a translation of the Nouvelle Vague film movement that prevailed in France in the 1950s and was transferred to Greek music by composer Yiannis Spanos. This term was used as an advertising slogan by Lyra recording company and its head, Alekos Patsifas. The simple orchestration – with the singer often accompanied only by a guitar – was ideal in producing easy-going songs with themes connected with the summer.
