“Saturday Shift” pays tribute to Giannis Varvates and Giannis Ptinis | 02 Nov. 2024, 08:00

The Honorary Award for Seamanship, recognizing their extensive maritime service and exemplary dedication to the nautical profession and ideals, was presented by the President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, Mrs. Melina Travlos, to Captain Giannis VarVates and Chef Giannis Ptinis during an event organized by the Union of Greek Shipowners.

The program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” invited the two veteran sailors to discuss their long journeys at sea and on ships. They share emotions, thoughts, experiences, and stories about their choices and the lives they dedicated to Greek commercial shipping, while also offering advice to newcomers entering the maritime profession.

They expressed no regrets about their choices and are very happy with the lives they’ve lived at sea and on ships. Notably, they emphasized: “If I had to start again, I would become a sailor. We were all one family,” said Yiannis Ptínis.

“The day I became Chief Engineer, my son, the youngest, was born. My whole life is tied to the sea,” commented Yiannis Barbatés.

This special radio journey on “Voice of Greece” and “Fair Winds and Following Shifts” is not to be missed.

The program will be broadcast on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 08:00 in the morning, with a repeat at 20:00 in the evening.

Special thanks to the sound engineer of ERT, Stefania Tsakiri, for the excellent collaboration!

Author Manolis Lampridis takes us on a voyage through time with his novel The Brave Men of Kasos: The Howl from the Ship’s Rail — a lyrical narrative set in 1732, on the eve of revolution, in Kasos, the storied island of the southeast Aegean with its proud seafaring tradition. Through richly drawn characters — captains, sailors, master shipwrights, village elders, pirates, saints, and folk heroines like Zantana — the book brings to life a world where history and myth converge. The people of Kasos gave everything they had, including their ships, to the Greek War of Independence, only to ... Read more
