Rebetiko song is the name of the Greek urban folk song that appeared at the end of the 19th century and acquired its familiar form, approximately by the third decade of the 20th century. It developed in the port cities where the working class lived, such as Piraeus and Thessaloniki, and then moved to other urban centers. It developed after 1922 with the arrival of the Asia Minors in Greece. Now, it officially belongs to the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage monuments. Today, we will be listening to rebetiko songs about Piraeus, primarily with the golden voice of Poly Panou as well as by other super vocalists such as Spyros Zagoraios and Michalis Genitsaris.
