Journey into the social and musical roots of argentine Tango, guided by Maria Damilakou and Vasilis Notis | Part 1: 14 Dec. 2024, 13:00

On the occasion of World Tango Day (December 11), Historical Walks on Voice of Greece take us on a journey to Argentina. With historian Maria Damilakou and Tango DJ Vasilis Notis as our guides, we delve into the social and musical roots of the Tango phenomenon, from its emergence in the late 19th century to today.

The tribute will unfold in three episodes:

  • Episode 1 (14/12): Historian and author Maria Damilakou will discuss how Tango was born in the impoverished neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and how social and economic conditions shaped its development. She will explain why Tango-mania first spread worldwide and how its globalization led to its acceptance by Argentina’s upper classes. The discussion will also focus on Tango’s relationship with Peronism, its decline, and eventual revival.
  • Episodes 2 & 3 (21 & 28/12): DJ Vasilis Notis will showcase Tango’s musical evolution through his extensive record collection, from its origins and classic melodies to its modern interpretations.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi
