A special feature on “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Angelidis, dedicated to the 1867 earthquake in Kefalonia that brought devastation, leveling entire villages and leaving tragedy in its wake.
The 7.2-magnitude quake literally swept through Lixouri, Argostoli, and all the villages of the island, some suffering partial damage, others completely destroyed. In Lixouri, only 12 houses remained standing, though deemed uninhabitable.
The official death toll reached 244, while more than 15,000 Kefalonians were left homeless, forced to survive in the streets.
We turn back the clock to that sorrowful day to recount the events as they unfolded, exactly 158 years ago today.
