Between Waves and Shores: The lives of sailors – Part I | 05 Apr. 2025, 13:00

The “Historical Walks” series on Voice of Greece sets sail on a journey into the world of sailors, both at sea and on land. In the next two episodes, Giorgos Tsimouris, emeritus professor of social anthropology at Panteion University, explores the trials and tribulations of those who dedicate their lives to the open waters—and the families who remain anchored between absence and return, caught between two parallel realities.

Drawing from the empirical research that shaped his book “We, the Sailors: Embarked and Ashore – An Anthropological Approach”, Tsimouris sheds light on the often-overlooked role of seafarers and their families in forging Greece’s maritime legacy.

The conversation delves into the allure of the voyage—an image steeped in myth and melody, immortalized in the poetry of Nikos Kavvadias—contrasting it with the stark realities of contemporary seafaring. We also examine the dwindling presence of Greek sailors on Greek-owned vessels and the barriers faced by women in the maritime profession.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi

Broadcast: Saturday, April 5 (Part A) and Saturday, April 12 (Part B) at 13:00 Athens time
