May 1 at GME means remembering the workers’ struggles that secured the social and economic rights enjoyed by our societies today. And it also means celebrating the identity and culture of the working classes, old and new. A part of this identity consists of the Greek labour songs that reflected an era of radical ideology and political consciousness: from the Chilean coal miners to the girls of the factories of Kokkinia neighbourhood and the Greek and Italian immigrants working in the industrial assembly lines of foreign lands, the protagonists of Greek labour songs remind us of the fundamentals of production and exploitation, as well as the quest for solidarity and justice.
