Navy Captain and author Dimitris Mitsatsos joins “Fair Winds and Following Seas – Saturday Shift” with Antonis Karagiannakis on Voice of Greece, on Saturday, 21 June 2025, at 08:00 Athens time (with a repeat at 20:00 the same day).
He speaks about the secret naval mission to Cyprus in 1964, which led to armed conflict, cost lives, and remained classified for 52 years.
Mitsatsos, author of the book “Declassified”, was a young officer in the Hellenic Navy and commander of the patrol boat FAETHON, who fought heroically against the Turkish Air Force. Severely injured and left with one arm, he was forced into silence and began a second life and career. At 28, he studied at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and later held executive positions in land-based industry and shipbuilding. In 1983, he founded and led the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) until 2020. Today, he holds the rank of Navy Captain in Reserve.
Mr. Mitsatsos vividly recounts the atmosphere of that time, offering detailed descriptions. He also reflects on the inner strength that enabled him to rebuild his life and achieve great success after the tragic 1964 incident in Cyprus.
