“Akis Panou: A Life in Song” | 14 Apr. 2026, 22:00

On Tuesday 14 April 2026, at 22:00 (Athens time), Voice of Greece’s program “Sound Portraits” with Stavroula Karali presents a special tribute to the great laïko composer and songwriter Akis Panou—a journey through music and storytelling.

The program sheds light on lesser-known aspects of his life: the profound impact of his brother’s loss, his deep connection to laïko music, his intense collaborations and conflicts, and the singular artistic vision that left an indelible mark on Greek song.

Rather than idealising him, the program seeks to trace the arc of Panou’s life as it unfolds through his lyrics and songs—capturing the trajectory of a man who lived at the extremes. From his childhood in the neighbourhoods of Kallithea, in Harokopou, to his final years, marked by illness and imprisonment.

A self-taught composer and lyricist, Panou wrote with a voice that was raw, experiential and deeply authentic. His work explored love, loss, poverty, betrayal and philotimo. A fiercely independent creator, he did not hesitate to challenge the establishment of his time, choosing instead to follow his own path and remain true to a strict personal code of values. Special reference is made to his relationship with Stelios Kazantzidis, with whom he was connected through great songs as well as a deep personal bond.
