Dimitris Karavellas, Director of WWF Greece, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
Following the signing of a Presidential Decree establishing the permanent marine protection of Gyaros, the designation of the Marine Protected Area is now officially secured.
Mr Karavellas noted, among other things, that WWF Greece, since 2013 and in collaboration with various stakeholders, has led a multifaceted program for the protection of Gyaros’ terrestrial and marine biodiversity. This effort began with the mapping of the area’s natural wealth and has continued with the implementation of innovative management practices, scientific research, and participatory governance. The initiative is ongoing and extends to 50 additional areas across Greece, while three more Presidential Decrees have also been signed to strengthen marine protection.
At the same time, he spoke about the presentation of the updated responsible seafood consumption guide, the Fish Guide, taking place these days, as well as about newly appearing fish species—most of which are now found and consumed in Greek seas.
