Greek poetry set to music: A journey through the great poets | 07 July 2026, 22:00

On Tuesday, 7 July, at 22:00 Athens time, the Voice of Greece program “Sound Portraits”, hosted by Stavroula Karali, premieres “Poetry Set to Music”, a new series of radio tributes celebrating the enduring dialogue between poetry and music.

The series explores how poetry has found new life through song, featuring works that have left an indelible mark on Greek culture. These are poems cherished not only for their literary significance but also for the timeless musical settings that introduced them to generations of listeners.

The opening episode begins with the iconic Kemal, with lyrics by Nikos Gatsos and music by Manos Hadjidakis, before continuing with musical settings of poems by some of the most influential voices in Greek and world literature, including Yiannis Ritsos, Federico García Lorca, Nazim Hikmet, Odysseas Elytis, Dionysios Solomos, Nikos Kavvadias, Kostas Karyotakis, Maria Polydouri, and Giorgos Seferis.
