“Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece take listeners to the historic Hellenic Naval Academy, where the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) presented 365 scholarships for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The program features excerpts from speeches by Vasilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy; Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners; Sofia Zacharaki, Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports; as well as several scholarship recipients.
365 Outstanding Students Across 19 Countries
This year’s scholarship program supports 365 outstanding young scholars from 44 regions of Greece, who will pursue one- or two-year full-time postgraduate studies at the predoctoral level in 11 academic disciplines at 119 universities in Greece and abroad, spanning 19 countries.
The response to the program was exceptionally strong, with approximately 1,200 applications submitted. All scholarship recipients were selected exclusively on the basis of academic merit.
The selection process was carried out by a special committee chaired by Giannis Xylas, with Nikolas Veniamis, Dinos Karoussis, and Alexandros Pappas serving as committee members. The committee was supported by a distinguished panel of academic advisors: Andreas Papandreou, Professor of Environmental Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Elias Papaioannou, Professor of Economics at London Business School; Meletios-Athanasios Dimopoulos, Professor of Therapeutics, Hematology and Oncology and Director of the Department of Clinical Therapeutics at the NKUA School of Medicine; and Giannis Vakarelis, Artistic Director of the Athens Concert Hall.
“Shipping and Society, Always Together”
The scholarship initiative forms part of the Union’s broader social responsibility program, which includes the expanded “SYN-ENOSIS FOR EDUCATION +100 SCHOLARSHIPS” initiative, as well as the symbolic “Excellence” scholarship awarded to the highest-ranking candidate among all recipients.
Through these initiatives, the Union of Greek Shipowners continues to place education, academic excellence, and the next generation at the center of its social contribution, guided by its enduring commitment: “Shipping and Society, Always Together.”
