On Saturday, 29 August 2026, at 12:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece’s “Our Town” presents a tribute to the ancient Greek lyre and its place in contemporary music education.
Performing and joining the discussion in Studio B of Hellenic Radio are Nikos Xanthoulis, teacher and researcher of the ancient Greek lyre; Giorgos Tabakis, virtuoso of the guitar and lyre; Sonia Charalambidou, deputy director of the Athens Music School; music educator and piano teacher Antigoni Zachari; and classical guitar teacher and choir conductor Margarita Saltamanika, who conceived the idea for the gathering.
Students from the Athens Music School also take part, while Athina Routsi, accompanied by the musicians, performs works by Harizanos, Hadjidakis, Theodorakis and Xanthoulis.
This musical encounter spanning three generations highlights the ancient Greek lyre’s enduring presence while introducing the instrument to a new generation.
