Nisyros Mayor Christofis Koronaios speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece about Nisyros joining the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
“Here, beside the breathing volcano, on land that trembles with life, we, the people of Nisyros, know very well that nature is in charge. We do not own this landscape. We are its custodians, the temporary guardians of a treasure entrusted to us by the gods and by the generations that came before us,” Koronaios emphasizes.
The mayor also discusses various issues facing the beautiful Dodecanese island, including its water supply, desalination, and wastewater treatment facilities. He also speaks about the different forms of tourism being developed on Nisyros beyond volcano tourism, such as hiking, thermal, and religious tourism.
“We are making a major effort to keep as many people as possible on the island. We provide nurses and teachers with a monthly allowance of €300, as well as a €3,000 allowance for every child born on the island, to help address the declining birth rate,” he says.
