Voice of Greece introduces ”The Ship’s Log” | 12 Jan. 2024

In January 2024, Voice of Greece officially launches The Ship’s Log, in collaboration with VoG’s show ”Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis.

A new column dedicated to all seafarers which means to to serve as a ‘safe harbor’, featuring thoughts, poems, dreams, memories, and incidents from life on board.

We started this column on the website of Voice of Greece, on the day of the birth of poet Nikos Kavvadias.
We couldn’t have found a better day.
Maybe on St. Nicholas Day, but are now already in January and we would have to wait a long time.

We first thought to call it The Deck Diary… however, some marine friends told us that they like ‘the Ship’s Log’ better: “We would gather on the ship’s bridge and we would always listen to Voice of Greece and that is what it meant to us. It was a vessel connecting us with our family and our home country.”

So Ship’s Log it is.

A photograph of a man of the sea and poet, Mantzouranis Kounadinis, will accompany these posts. It was given to us by his daughter, Vicky, who lovingly takes care of his archive.

Us mainlanders perhaps will never understand what Kavvadias means in the poem “Kuro Siwo” when he asks himself: Is it the compass or the ship that turns?

Now all of you and anyone who wants, can help us understand better.

Voice of Greece – ERT wishes you Fair Winds and Following Seas!
