Back in the Day… 18 July 1949 | 18 July 2025

A new regular segment of the show “Time in Greece” begins today, titled “Back in the Day…”

It will air every Friday starting this autumn, after the summer break.

Nikolas Angelidis becomes your time-travel guide, turning the calendar back to a specific date and leafing through the newspapers of that day, as we rediscover the stories behind the headlines.

Our first stop takes us to Monday, 18 July 1949. Together, we read the news and unravel the events that shaped that day’s history.

Among those we meet today:

– Thanasis Bembis, caught in a tug-of-war between Fostiras and Olympiakos
– Kleanthis Maropoulos, playing a one-off match for Esperos Kallitheas, on loan from AEK
– The “Ajax of Greece”, historic Aias Salaminas
– Legendary wrestlers Karpozilos and Koutalianos, seemingly made of steel—their saga even became a song
– The Greek champions Panathinaikos, winning the title amid brawls
– Olympic gold medallist Emil Zátopek, known as the “human locomotive”
– Historic club Iraklis Elefsinas, in green and white, bearing the shamrock as its emblem

Enjoy the listen, enjoy the ride—through time and memory.
