Poet of the Week: Stathis Gourgouris | 30 July 2025

Stathis Gourgouris (https://stathisgourgouris.com/) is a poet, essayist, translator, and electronic music composer. He is Professor of Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. He has published eight books of philosophy and criticism in English, as well as four in Greek: Does Literature Think? (Nefeli, 2007), Dream Nation (Kritiki, 2010), Perhaps Mischief (Nissos, 2017), and The Worldly and the Global (Psifides, 2025). He has published five poetry collections, the most recent in Greek being Introduction to Physics (2005). He has received honors at the 4th International Poetry Festival in Sapanja and was a finalist in the 5th International Flash Fiction Competition organized by the Fundación César Egido Serrano and the Museo de la Palabra in Madrid (2019). Among other accolades, he has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his body of work (2023), the Lenfest Distinguished Faculty Award—Columbia University’s highest faculty distinction (2015)—and fellowships from the Templeton Foundation, Mellon Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Wright-Ingraham Institute, and Fulbright. His poems have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Serbian, Japanese, and Hindi. He is also a regular contributor to international and Greek media, writing on political and literary issues.
