2024 Orthodox Holy Week on Voice of Greece

Voice of Greece radio modifies its program from Lazarus Saturday and throughout the Holy Week with special broadcasts conveying the overwhelming atmosphere of Passion Week. The program is dedicated to the Greeks of Diaspora, the fathers of Christianity, who continue to preserve the customs and traditions of the Holy Days in the distant countries where they live and work.

On Lazarus Saturday, “Our Town” with Themis Rodamitis will host musician Evi Mazi (12:00 Athens time), while on Palm Sunday, we will listen to a two-hour musical program with Loudovikos ton Anogeion (12:00 Athens time) and on M. Monday the traditional music performer Panagiotis Sdoukos takes over, accompanied by oud soloist Giorgos Pappas (19:00 Athens time).

From Holy Monday to Great Friday, the English-language show “Greek Music Express” (14:00 15:00 Athens time) with Hercules Economou, is full of music that evokes reverence and devotion In particular: Holy Monday and Tuesday are dedicated to Michalis Grigoriou’s superb oratorio the Dark Act, based on the poetry of Tasos Livaditis, on Holy Wednesday we will be listening the oratorio Kosmas the Aetolian by Mimis Plessas, on Holy Thursday the religious music of Andreas Katsigiannis, and on Great Friday, the shocking work “Helioskopio” by Stavros Kouyoumtzis, with poetry by Giorgos Themelis. in poetry by G. Themelis.

Throughout the Holy Week, magnificent obituaries accompany customs and traditions from various parts of Greece in the show “The Elves of Tradition” with Maria Koutsimpiri (15:00 – 16:00 Athens time).

How do Greeks experience Holy Week in different parts of the world? Throughout the Holy Week, Petros Diplas and Dimitris Kontogiannis mentally travel from the Congo and Chile, Peru, Canada, Germany, Australia and Argentina and talk to our compatriots on the show “Our Global Voice” (16:00 – 17:00 Athens time)

On Easter Monday, which also happens to be the date of birth and death of Constantine Cavafy, Giannis Papoutsakis has prepared a tribute to the great Alexandrian poet.

From Holy Tuesday – Thursday we listen to poems for the Holy Week, accompanied by classical music from film soundtracks about the Passion of the Christ (17:00 – 18:00 Athens time).

Songs that Take You Places“, a special addition to the program for the week, will bring you selections from the Greek music scene; each song is a reference point through time.

Another Holy Week daily special is “The Composer of the Week“, a series of tributes curated by Gianna Triantafylli. In particular, on Monday and Tuesday we listen to compositions by Giorgos Stavrianos (02:00 Athens time), on Wednesday by Eleni Karaindrou (00:00 Athens time), on Thursday by Stamatis Spanoudakis (00:00 Athens time ) and onGood Friday by Manos Hadjidakis (01:00 Athens time) as well as a special tribute to the lyrical, nostalgic and melancholic musical work “The Distress of the Afternoon” by Giorgos Stavrianos (02:00 Athens time).
