August 2nd marks the Memorial Day of the Roma Holocaust, a lesser-known tragedy where around half a million Roma were systematically exterminated by the Nazis during World War II. Shedding light on this dark episode in global history is a crucial step in combating discrimination.
On Saturday, August 3, “Historical Walks” engaged in a discussion with three young Greek Roma who are part of the European Equirom program fighting anti-Gypsyism. They shared the Roma history through their personal narratives – Petros Philippidis, a sociologist, Spyros Bakas, a journalism student, and Stavros Gouvannis, a student and representative of Unicef, illustrated how they and many other Roma pursued education and are now actively challenging the ingrained prejudices against their community in Greek society.
Education and personal connections are key, according to our guests. “Get to know us,” they emphasized, as the only way to break down stereotypes.
