Poet of the Week: Giorgos Ch. Theocharis | 11 Oct. 2024

Seven poems each week, one Greek poem every day, travel through the frequencies of Voice of Greece to the ends of the earth, wherever there are Greek voices.

The week from October 7, 2024, to October 13, 2024, is dedicated to the poet Giorgos Ch. Theocharis.

Giorgos Ch. Theocharis was born in Desfina, Fokida, in December 1951. He studied Journalism and Public Relations. He retired from the aluminum production industry in Asprospitia, Distomo Beach, in Viotia, where he currently lives. He has published seven poetry books: Poor Ore (Emvolimon 1990), Crop Rotation (Public Central Library of Livadeia 1996), Memento (Kastaniotis 2004), From Memory (Melani 2010), Bone Abundance (Melani 2018), That the Territory is Moderate (Koukkida 2019), Erotic Word Spectrum (Telegraph 2024), and a collection of his poems Mortality Certificates – Poems 1970-2010 (Modern Expression 2010).

He also published the prose book Twofold Memory (Polis 2021), the historical research book Distomo June 10, 1944 – the Holocaust (Modern Expression 2014), which was awarded the State Chronicle – Testimony Award in 2011, and the book A Soldier of Life – The Poet Titos Patrikios (Takis Sinopoulos Foundation – Gavriilidis 2019).
A selection of his poems, titled Qirinj kustese, was published in Tirana (Neraida Publications 2018), in Albanian, translated by Nikos Katsalidas. He curated the anthologies of Greek poems Foreign Blood Vintage (Gavriilidis 2014), Footsteps in the Filatro of Friends (Gavriilidis 2015), Harvesting Generations’ Dowry (Gavriilidis 2018), The Subterranean Revealed (Rome 2019), Whatever the Foam Murmurs (Rome 2020), and co-edited with Konstantinos Bouras The Poems of 2015 (Society of Decades 2016) and The Poems of 2016 (Society of Decades 2017).

He directs the literary magazine Emvolimon, published in Asprospitia, Viotia since 1988, which was awarded the State Literature Prize in 2014, and contributed to the print newspaper BookPress.
He also publishes essays and literary criticism.
His poems have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Albanian.
He is a member of the Society of Writers and the Circle of Poets. He participated in the Committee of State Children’s Literature Awards.
