Author Dimitris K. Alexopoulos on “Saturday Shift” | 25 Jan. 2025, 08:00

The author of the book “Relentless Radio” (Ασίγαστος Ασύρματος), Dimitris K. Alexopoulos, is the guest on “Saturday Shift”, the weekend special edition of the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece, on Saturday, January 25, 2025. He shares the incredible story of his grandfather, Dimitris, who came from mountainous Phthiotis and achieved his dream of becoming a sailor, even though he had never seen the sea as a child.

He became a wireless operator in the Navy, experiencing World War I and the Asia Minor Catastrophe. During World War II, he was part of the resistance organization “Omiros” (Homer), which collaborated with the Allies.

Risking his life and that of his family, he was responsible for radio communications in occupied Athens. Thanks to the efforts of radio operators like him, many Allied operations were successfully carried out in Greece. For his bravery and courage, including being imprisoned and tortured by the occupiers, he was honored with the Golden Cross of Valor and other distinctions. However, he kept his story well-hidden until his grandson, Dimitris K. Alexopoulos, revealed it to us.

Join us for an engaging radio journey filled with stories, history, and archives. The episode is airing on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 8:00 AM and replayed at 8:00 PM.

Author Manolis Lampridis takes us on a voyage through time with his novel The Brave Men of Kasos: The Howl from the Ship’s Rail — a lyrical narrative set in 1732, on the eve of revolution, in Kasos, the storied island of the southeast Aegean with its proud seafaring tradition. Through richly drawn characters — captains, sailors, master shipwrights, village elders, pirates, saints, and folk heroines like Zantana — the book brings to life a world where history and myth converge.
