Biodiversity and the Environment | 07 June 2025, 13:00

On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, the show “Historical Walks” focuses on the concept of biodiversity in Greece and worldwide on Saturday, June 7th, at 1:00 p.m.

The guest of the episode is Panagiotis Pafilis, Professor of Animal Diversity at the Department of Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

In conversation with Marilena Katsimi, he explains what biodiversity is and why its protection is essential, having a profound impact on human life. Professor Pafilis also discusses major threats endangering the planet’s flora and fauna—such as ecosystem degradation, the climate crisis, pollution, and overexploitation—while offering hope by emphasizing the role of international and national agreements and political will.

He highlights the uniqueness of Greece’s natural environment and the protective measures being implemented through national strategies, research initiatives, and citizen action.

As he notes, engagement with environmental issues in Greece and worldwide leaves a bittersweet impression: the challenges are enormous, yet progress is being made. This dual sentiment is echoed in the music he selected to accompany the program.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi
Broadcast: Saturday, June 7th at 13:00 (Athens time)
Repeat: Sunday, June 8th at 05:00 (Athens time)
