Women in Greece began asserting their rights as early as the late 19th century. Following the fall of the dictatorship, the feminist movement gained widespread support, developed a strong political and social presence, and played a decisive role in shaping the country’s modern framework for gender equality.
Despite significant progress, gender-based violence, pay inequality, the unequal distribution of care work, and women’s limited representation in decision-making positions show that gender inequality remains deeply entrenched. They also remind us that no achievement can be taken for granted and that rights must be continuously defended and advanced.
Marking the anniversary of the restoration of democracy, the new episode of “Historical Walks” with Marilena Katsimi, airing on Saturday, 25 July 2026, at 13:00 Athens time, explores the history of the Greek feminist movement, focusing particularly on the post-dictatorship era.
The program’s guest is historian Maria Repousi, who taught history and history education at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki until her retirement. She is currently director and scientific coordinator of the Nikos Poulantzas Institute.
This episode concludes the first cycle of the program’s series examining history through a gender perspective, from the women of the 1821 Revolution to the feminists of post-dictatorship Greece and today’s movements. The series seeks to bring to light stories that have often remained on the margins of the official historical narrative.
After all, history is never neutral. It is written by people, reflects power relations, and can be reexamined as new voices are heard and new perspectives emerge.
