“The boatswain Mastromanolís’s dream… the tragedy of the ‘Luisa'”
“This must be what hell looks like! Exactly 17:53, Saturday afternoon, 5 June 1965 – we were living through the most horrific thing a sailor could ever witness. A tragic accident. The Italian oil tanker LUISA, 32,400 tons, was moored at Dock No. 1. It was during the usual oil-loading procedure. After a terrifying explosion, an uncontrollable fire burst out — flames reaching 80 meters wrapped around the Italian tanker, while the burning oil, pure liquid death, spilled into the sea and surrounded the Luisa. We stood there frozen, helpless and afraid, in a small boat, just a breath away from the doomed ship, as we heard the screams of the crew who had no chance of escape.”
A maritime tale written by Manolis Dimellas for Karpathiaka Nea.
A true story for those who believe in dreams and omens.
