A beautiful and unique tribute to the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated every year with great reverence both in Greece and among the Greek diaspora, is presented by the program “Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for All Ages” on Voice of Greece.
On Saturday, 16 August 2025, the program featured a reading from the book The Virgin Mary and the Lost Icon by Pinelopi & Maria Moraiti, illustrated by Thanos Tsilis & Eva Karantinou, published by Porfyra.
On Saturday, 23 August 2025 (17:00–18:00 Athens time), two more tales from Porfyra editions, illustrated by Natalia Kapatsoulia, will be aired.
In the first part, listeners will hear the story The Little Onion, an adaptation of a work by Dostoevsky:
“The angel who stands by us at birth is called to save a woman whose only act of kindness was giving a beggar a small onion. Will her guardian angel manage to save her at the final hour? And can this single onion be enough to help her grasp the meaning of life and existence?”
In the second part, the story The Child with the Small Jug takes us back in time to the hagiography of Saint George, during the era of the Saracen pirates who devastated the island of Mytilene:
“On Saint George’s feast day, the Saracens launch their attack on the island. They destroy, plunder, and capture many people. Among them is young Giorgis who, torn from his mother, becomes a slave. His special bond with his namesake Saint George and his love for him give him hope and strength. But will little Giorgis also gain his longed-for freedom?”
