Before and after 1922: A grandmother’s memories of the Asia Minor Catastrophe (Part II) | 03 Oct. 2026, 19:00

On Saturday, 3 October 2026, from 19:00 to 20:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece’s “Narratives”—“Stories and fairy tales for children and adults” remembers 1922 and the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The program features excerpts from the second part of “Tzieri mou 1922” (“My dearest, 1922”), by author and award-winning illustrator Foteini Stefanidi, published by Kaleidoskopio. This installment follows the refugees into the aftermath of the Catastrophe and the lives they began anew in Greece.

A handful of memories from a grandmother’s lifetime, offered like photographs scattered along the course of a long journey. Alongside them, the author provides notes and documentary material that illuminate the people, places, and events preserved in these scenes of remembrance.

There are glimpses of life before 1922, when only clouds in the sky and the cares of everyday life cast their shadows. There are scenes from within the Catastrophe itself, as the “karayankini”—the great fire—devoured lives and possessions and left hearts darkened. And there are memories of what came after: exile, displacement, and the struggle to begin again. Every one of them true.

Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki Iona
Sound editing: Maria Fotakopoulou
