How many know the details about the Greek seafarers who sailed with Magellan and Columbus on the first explorations of the world?
The program “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Angelidis sheds light on the history of all the sailors of Greek origin who took part in those early voyages — seafarers from Rhodes, Nafplio, Crete, Chios, and Corfu.
In 1519, Magellan set out with 243 daring sailors to discover a shorter route to the Spice Islands. Eight members of his crew were Greeks! By the late 17th century, Columbus too had Greek sailors by his side.
Among the most important Greek presences at sea of that era was the Rhodian Michalli da Ruodo, who succeeded in designing the first illustrated manual of navigation.
