It was on this very day, 19 August 1960, that Belka and Strelka, two mixed-breed stray dogs, traveled into space. The two Soviet strays remained in orbit for a full 24 hours, completing 17 revolutions around the Earth.
Today, the program “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Angelidis tells the story of these two little companions – the criteria by which they were selected and their short but spectacular journey. Without realizing it, Belka and Strelka, by successfully carrying out their mission, made history and paved the way for Yuri Gagarin’s flight just one year later.
