Rosa Imvrioti… A monumental chapter—one of the most remarkable—in the history of education in Greece. An educator who transformed teaching methods and a pioneer in special education, she founded the first school for children with intellectual disabilities in 1937.
But her mission was not confined to the classroom. She played a vital role in the struggles against the occupiers and their local collaborators. She was called the “Red Teacher”… adored by her students and their parents, but vilified by her enemies, who branded her a Bulgarian, a traitor, a communist of EAM, even a “she-devil.”
On this episode of “Time in Greece” we journey through history. We meet this towering figure. We learn about her work, her achievements within an otherwise indifferent educational system of her time, and her blood-stained battles for freedom and justice—struggles that led to exile, torture, and relentless persecution. She endured… and she made history!
