“Faraway Words” on the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Sydney | 01 Dec. 2025

In this episode, “Faraway Words” welcomed two representatives of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Sydney: President Liana Vertzagia and Vice President Dimitra Michopoulou.

Liana Vertzagia’s family arrived in Australia in 1897. Raised with Greek customs, traditions, and culture, she became active in community affairs from an early age. During the program, she spoke about the most significant activities of the Sydney branch — the first women’s association in the city — which in 2026 marks its 75th anniversary.
“I want to close my eyes in Greece,” Mrs. Vertzagia said with emotion.

Dimitra Michopoulou spoke about her own journey on the “Ellinis”, travelling from Greece to Australia, the hardships of her early years, her connection with the Greek Diaspora, and how engaging with the community helped her preserve her identity.
“Greece is my soul,” she said characteristically.

The episode concluded with a song performed by Mrs. Michopoulou’s granddaughter, Dionysia.
