Dr. Antonios Avgerinos, President of the Hellenic Red Cross, retired Major General and Doctor of Pharmacy, joins Voice of Greece on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, at 22:00 Athens time, as the featured guest on “Remarkable Personalities” with Stavroula Karali.
Dr. Avgerinos revisits the vision and core principles of Henry Dunant — humanitarian, activist and founder of the Red Cross — whose ideals continue to shape the organisation worldwide since its establishment in Geneva in 1863.
He also reflects on the pivotal role of the Hellenic Red Cross during the Asia Minor Campaign and the Asia Minor Catastrophe, when its volunteers reached as far as the banks of the Sakarya River, supporting Greek soldiers under exceptionally difficult conditions.
In addition, Dr. Avgerinos recounts the dramatic events and the heavy toll borne by the Hellenic Red Cross in the Second World War, highlighting the unwavering dedication of its volunteer nurses who served even under intense bombardment — a lasting testament to courage, self-sacrifice and humanitarian service.
Turning to the present, he outlines the Organisation’s contemporary mission, underscoring the indispensable role of volunteers — the very “heart” of the Hellenic Red Cross — who remain at the side of those in need during extreme weather events, natural disasters, and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program also includes an intervention by Mr. Zeki Mehmet Ali, trainer and volunteer of the Hellenic Red Cross. He shares a powerful personal story: following a traffic accident, he was assisted by a volunteer he himself had trained — a striking illustration of the cycle of solidarity and service fostered by the Red Cross.
