Poet of the Week: Thomas Ioannou | 17 Dec. 2025

Thomas Ioannou was born in December 1979 in Arta and grew up in Preveza. He studied Medicine in Athens and works as a specialist neurologist. His first poetry collection, “Ippokratous 15”, was published in 2011 by Saixpirikon Publications and was unanimously awarded the State Prize for Best First-Time Author in 2012. His poems and essays have appeared in literary magazines, the daily press, and collective volumes. He is a regular contributor to the quarterly poetry magazine “Ta Poiitika”. His poetry has been translated and anthologised in several languages. In April 2017, “Ippokratous 15” was published in French translation by Clio Mavroeidakos in a bilingual edition by Desmos Publications, under the title “15, rue Hippocrate”. In September 2022, the anthology “The Poet Byron Leontaris (1932–2014): As I Stammered My Fate…” was published by the Takis Sinopoulos Foundation – Workshop of Modern Greek Poetry, featuring his introduction and selection. In October 2025, his poetry collection “Open Date” was published by Polis Publications.
