Traditional boatyards and the new legislation on “Saturday Shift” | 23.05.2026, 08:00

A new law concerning the granting of usage rights for spaces and facilities connected with Greece’s traditional boatyards was recently passed by the Hellenic Parliament. The legislation marks a major step forward for the protection and revival of this historically and culturally significant sector, opening new prospects for the people who work in traditional wooden shipbuilding and maritime craftsmanship.

Traditional tarsanades and boatyards, ship carpenters, wooden boatbuilders, wooden caiques and fishing boats, slipways, pulleys and hauling systems, along with the wider culture surrounding them, form an integral part of Greece’s maritime heritage, seamanship and intangible cultural heritage.

For this reason, the guests of “Fair Winds and Following Seas – Saturday Shift” on Voice of Greece are:

  • Mr. Nikolaos Bloskas, Director at the General Secretariat of the Prime Minister of Greece
  • Ms. Antonia Moropoulou, Vice President of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) and Professor Emerita at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)
  • Mr. Vasilis Vasileiadis, naval architect and Secretary General of the Panhellenic Association of Shipyards and Tarsanades

The discussion will also feature an intervention by Mr. Nektarios Kleissas, President of the Panhellenic Association of Shipyards and Tarsanades.

The guests, who have worked tirelessly for many years toward achieving this goal, explain how this important milestone was reached, the challenges faced along the way, and the significance of the legislation for the preservation of Greece’s traditional wooden shipbuilding craft.

An engaging discussion that highlights the importance of wooden shipbuilding in Greece and the impact of this landmark legislation on one of the country’s most historic maritime trades.
