We discuss humanistic medicine with Anastasios Germenis, professor emeritus at the University of Thessaly’s School of Medicine and corresponding member of the Academy of Athens.
Drawing on his book “Ανθρωπιστική Ιατρική: Από τον πατερναλισμό στην ασθενοκεντρικότητα,” published by Crete University Press, Germenis explains how advances in biotechnology and digital technology, notably telemedicine and artificial intelligence, the restructuring of healthcare services, and emerging care needs associated with an aging population and rising rates of chronic disease are changing the roles of medicine’s two central figures, the doctor and the patient, and deepening the lack of a humanistic approach in modern medicine.
Against this backdrop, the doctor–patient relationship faces considerable pressure and is undergoing a process of adjustment.
According to Germenis, involving doctors and patients in shaping and implementing the models of care that future healthcare systems will adopt is an act of humanistic medicine of major importance.
