On Tuesday, 8 September 2026, Voice of Greece’s “Common Ground” took listeners on a tour of Anemotia, a village on the island of Lesvos.
Built on the inner slopes of an ancient volcano, the village is known for the skilled stonemasons who constructed it and for its vineyards.
Our guides were Panagiotis Chalkodaimon, president of the Anemotia Cultural Association of Lesvos; Ilias Kastrinellis, president of the Ifaisteio Anemotias Social Cooperative Enterprise; Ilias Georgakis, a photographer who manages a Facebook page dedicated to the village; and Evgenia Mitraka, a lawyer who emigrated to Melbourne at the age of nine, when her family left Anemotia for Australia. During one of her visits to her ancestral village this year, she was honored by her fellow villagers.
