Marking the anniversary of Brazil’s independence on 7 September 1822 and looking ahead to the October elections, “Historical Walks” travels to Latin America’s largest country. The program explores Brazil beyond the familiar images of samba, Carnival and soccer.
On Saturday, 26 September 2026, at 13:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece broadcasts the third and final part of the series tribute to Brazil, titled “Is There Hope for the Country of the Future?”
Austrian Jewish writer Stefan Zweig called Brazil the “country of the future” in 1941. As Europe sank into Nazism and war, he saw the promise of a better world in Brazil’s wealth and cultural diversity. Eighty-five years later, as the country approaches its October elections, the question remains: Will that future ever arrive?
The guests are constitutional law scholar Dimitri Dimoulis, professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation’s São Paulo Law School, and Brazilian scholar Soraya Gasparetto Lunardi, professor of Constitutional Law and Fundamental Rights at São Paulo State University (UNESP).
This historical and musical journey explores a country of many cultures, immense wealth and extreme poverty, tolerance and structural racism, and deep social inequalities.
