Capt. Dimitris Tsiropinas from Chios shares more of his life at sea on Voice of Greece’s “Fair Winds and Following Seas.”
“After my difficult first voyage, eight months aboard the M/V IONIKH AKTH, I spent a month ashore. Then I joined the M/V SANTA KOSTANS, a 12,000-ton ship owned by the Margaroni family, as a seaman. We loaded flour in Italy and Spain and carried it to Sri Lanka. In the Red Sea, we did chipping work in temperatures of 48°C; the steel deck reached 60°C. I was 18 when the captain appointed me boatswain,” he recalls.
