Sofia Papadimitriou joins “Fair Winds and Following Seas.” She holds a doctorate in law from the University of Munich, is a researcher at the University of the Aegean’s Laboratory of Tourism Transport, Infrastructure, and Destination Development, and serves as Shipping Coordinator at New Democracy’s Secretariat for Productive Sectors.
Speaking from Chios, an island with a proud seafaring tradition, where she is currently staying, she discusses a specialized study underway at the University of the Aegean.
“Technology and shipping are now inextricably linked,” Papadimitriou explains. “The Athens Forum and its dedicated Maritime Workshop highlight the strategic importance of the memorandum of understanding signed between AI Catalyst and AMMITEC—the Association of Maritime Managers in Information Technology and Communications. This partnership, which effectively began at Posidonia, brings practical applications of artificial intelligence into shipping offices and aboard ships. But technology also needs rules, and a major regulatory challenge worldwide is the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships Code, known as the MASS Code.”
