To mark World Mental Health Day, we speak with Nikolaos Christodoulou, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Thessaly’s Department of Medicine and Director of the University Psychiatric Clinic at Larissa University Hospital, about mental health in an age of constant pressure and growing everyday demands.
We discuss the distinction between normal stress and psychological distress, the warning signs we should not ignore, and the importance of seeking help early.
Christodoulou emphasizes the importance of prevention and caring for our mental health. He also discusses psychological resilience and the need to recognize our personal limits, without feeling that we must be able to withstand everything.
In the final part of the conversation, he steps beyond the strictly scientific realm to reflect on his personal and academic journey: his 23 years in the United Kingdom, his decision to return to Greece, and how his international experience has contributed to the Greek scientific community.
