1925–2025: Mikis & Manos – One Hundred Years Since Their Birth | 26 July 2025, 17:00

To mark the centenary of the birth of two of Greece’s greatest modern composers, Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis, the program “Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for Children and Grown-Ups” presents a special tribute to the musical legacy of these two towering figures, born in the same year—1925—just three months apart.

From their youth, they shared a path shaped by friendship, conservatory studies, and a common vision of becoming composers—an ambition that would launch them on a timeless, universal journey. Through their work, they carried the idea of Greece to every corner of the globe. In a turbulent era, the power of their music and poetry—combined with the international acclaim they received—established them not only as world-renowned composers but also as modern ambassadors of Hellenism.

The first part of the tribute airs on Saturday, 26 July, and focuses on Mikis Theodorakis, born on 29 July 1925 on the island of Chios. The program features his collection 40 Songs for Children, some of which he composed in his youth. Originally released in 1994, the album showcases the award-winning Children’s Choir of the Larissa Municipal Conservatory, accompanied by the Conservatory’s Orchestra under the direction of Dimitris Karvounis.

Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki Iona
Broadcast: Saturday, 26 July 2025, 17:00–18:00 (Athens time)

The second part of the tribute marking the centenary of the birth of Greece’s two great modern composers will be dedicated to Manos Hadjidakis. It will air in October 2025, the month of his birth, and will focus on his life, work, and enduring legacy.
