A tribute to the Greek-speaking Villages of Southern Italy – Part III | 30 Nov. 2024, 10:00

At the southernmost tip of Apulia, in the Salento peninsula, a sign along the road connecting Lecce to Otranto, reads ”Kalos Irtate”. This indicates that you are entering Grecia Salentina, one of the two Greek-speaking regions of Southern Italy. Here, the locals -known as Griko people or by other variations such as Greakoi or Griko- will greet you warmly, share songs, and offer hospitality.

That enduring spirit of the Greek-speaking communities of Southern Italy is evolving continuously, openning the gates of all the untold treasures of history, traditions and gist oin a way that fascinates everyone visits this very magic place.

In collaboration with our special guests (Giorgio Vincenzo Filieri, Manuella Pelegrino, Kostas Konstantatos, Lefteris Dakalakis, Lambros Baltitsiotis and Donatella Serino) we aim to map the Greek-speaking villages, engage in conversations to hear their perspectives, and envision the future of these unique communities. This exploration not only highlights the rich cultural tapestry of these areas but also fosters a deeper understanding of their ongoing significance and potential for future generations. For further insights into the history and cultural significance of these communities, you can refer to sources that discuss their traditions and modern-day relevance.
