What makes the Greek ‘panigiri’ (music festivals) so special? Focusing on the festivals of Ikaria, the quintessential summer “must” for free spirits and not just them, we seek to understand the “past” in relation to the “present” of tradition. On Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. (Athens time), together with Ikariot educator Vasilis Karnavas and ethnomusicologist Paraskevi (Vivi) Kanellatou, we explore the role that the recognition of festivals as an element of “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO has played in their dissemination, preservation, and evolution within the current zeitgeist.
