The Athens Polytechnic Uprising on Voice of Greece

With testimonies, memories, and stories from the Polytechnic Uprising, along with special commemorative broadcasts, Voice of Greece participates in celebrating the anniversary.

On Friday, November 15, 2024, at 1:00 PM Greek time, Thomas Sideris, on the show “Unguarded Passage”, explores the pivotal role radio played in the Polytechnic Uprising. Through newly uncovered testimonies, he presents the untold story of the student-operated radio stations in Athens and Thessaloniki. He also examines how, during the post-junta years, students used radio waves once again to prevent the passage of an anti-democratic law.

Later that day, at 2:00 PM Greek time, Gianna Triantafylli, on her show “The Voice That Unites Us”, showcases the melodies that accompanied the students and the role music played in the Polytechnic Uprising.

Comparative Politics scholar and author, Dr. Yiannis Balabanidis, joins Ariadni Sofia Kouri on the show “Ariadni’s Thread” on Saturday, November 16, at 10:00 AM. Together, they examine what revolution means and the importance of commemorating the heroic days of the students’ spontaneous uprising against the oppressive junta regime.

On the same day, at 1:00 PM, historian and award-winning author of “The Children of the Dictatorship”, Kostis Kornetis, is the guest of Marilena Katsimi on “Historical Walks”. They discuss the events and myths surrounding the collective memory of post-junta Greece.

On Sunday, November 17, at 12:00 PM, the show Our Town” with Themis Rodamitis presents a two-hour tribute to Vasilis Vasilikos, the iconic author of “Z”, who was exiled during the junta and became a symbol of the anti-dictatorship struggle. The broadcast will feature songs that resonated during the Polytechnic Uprising.

Listeners of Voice of Greece will also hear poetry dedicated to the students’ struggle and the free-spirited Greeks, written by Yiannis Ritsos, Kostoula Mitropoulou, Manolis Anagnostakis, Nikiforos Vrettakos, Lena Papa, Takis Sinopoulos, and Ilias Gris. This will be part of the two-hour program “Journeys Basking in Greek Light” on Sunday, November 17, at 4:00 PM. The tribute by Giannis Papoutsakis includes audio recordings from the Polytechnic’s radio station and songs sung by students and supporters during those days.
